I saw Dear John the other day and it was very average, albeit enjoyable. If you don't know anything about the movie it is just another run of the mill Nicholas Sparks story, starring Channing Tatum and Amanda Seyfried. It had a lot of the same elements as The Notebook - boy meets girl, boy and girl get separated, girl finds a new boy, boy is devastated. There's even a kissing scene in the rain.
I won't give away what happens in case your significant other drags you along to see it but I will provide you with a drinking game to make it more enjoyable. I was expecting the movie to be more romantic than it actually was, which is probably good for most people. Henry Thomas (Elliot from E.T.) plays Savannah's neighbor with an autistic son played by Braeden Reed, who happens to actually have autism. John's father is also autistic. Why does Nicholas Sparks keep giving characters disorders in all of his books? Allie has Alzheimer's disease in The Notebook, Jamie has leukemia in A Walk to Remember, Kyle has a speech impediment in The Rescue, etc. etc. - you get the point.
The drinking game is very simple -
Drink every time someone says "Dear John" or "Dear Savannah"
The next Nicholas Sparks movie, The Last Song, happens to come out next Wednesday, March 31st. It stars Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth, her real life boyfriend. Check out the trailer below.
