"Don't renew the contract of Joe Morgan" isn't quite as snappy as "Fire Joe Morgan," but technically, that's how Morgan's tenure as Sunday Night Baseball analyst will end. (His broadcast partner, Jon Miller, is off the Sunday Night telecast as well, though the Times reports that ESPN has asked Miller if he wants to stay on as the Sunday-night game's radio voice.) In honor of the occasion, we direct you to Tommy Craggs's terrific 2005 SF Weekly piece about Morgan, republished today on Deadspin. (Sample Morgan quote from the piece, on the topic of Moneyball: "Why would I wanna read a book about a computer, that gives computer numbers?")
What are we gonna do? Who's gonna tell us it's a really big situation when there are 2 outs in the 9th and a the tying run is at the plate? His insight was always incredible. For example, I remember Joe Morgan telling us some batters like the ball high and some like it low. Or when he says the Red Sox may win this game because of superior pitching but the Yanks might win too if they can hit the ball.
