Rajon Rondo, assist machine. So far this season, Rondo is assisting on about 60 percent of his team’s baskets when he is on the floor (his assist rate). He has racked up more assists through the first five games of the season than any player in history has done in that same stretch. More than Stockton, more than Magic, more than Cousy. It really is a thing of beauty. Rondo is averaging 16.4 points to 4 turnovers per game — a 4/1 ratio. But it’s not just the numbers that impress, it’s when he’s getting them. Rondo had four assists at halftime last night, as the Celtics found themselves in a fight with a plucky Bucks team. Rondo picked up four more assists in the fourth quarter, but the game remained close, as Greg Payne pointed out at Celtics Blog. Then when it was on the line Rondo was dealing — he assisted on six of the Celtics last seven baskets in regulation, and he scored the team’s two buckets before that. He picked up another assist and in overtime.
Let's look at the facts. Rondo is the heart and soul of this Celtics team. You'd never say that two years ago but we saw a glimpse of it in last year's finals and this season he's truly blossoming. I mean he's filthy. Atrocious. I'm convinced he can do whatever the fuck he wants when has the ball in his hands and he can probably swipe it from any player when he's playing defense. His one glaring weakness is his outside shooting but even that's coming around. He's been hitting the elbow jumper all season. Look up his shot chart. If Rajon Rondo wants to push the tempo then he's gonna push the tempo. If he wants to dish then he's gonna dish and get his guys open shots. And he rarely turns the ball over. You can score 30 points, dish out 10 assists but if you're turning the ball over 8 times then you can pretty much cut those offensive numbers in half. Kobe, Lebron, Durant, Wade then who? Chris Paul? He's a 2010 version of Steve Francis and Stephon Marbury. Big numbers, bad teammate, no real playoff wins. You have to slide Rondo into the discussion if not in the top 5 all together. We don't win 45 games without him this season and we still have two other players who are top 20 guys in the league. Other team's would fuck goats to have two top 20 players.
