LONDON (AP)—Ghana midfielder Michael Essien fears he may miss the World Cup because of a knee injury. Ghana’s top player injured a hamstring while playing for Chelsea against APOEL Nicosia in the European Champions League on Dec. 8.
This is horrible news. I've loved Ghana as a team ever since the 2006 World Cup. They were my sleeper team this year. Now, i'm not so sure about that. They have Serbia, Australia, and Germany in their group for the first round this year. Not a great group, but without Essien i dont know how they'll do. Hopefully he can recover in time. The injury happened while playing against APOEL Nicosia, though. Not only does Mrs. Nicosia threaten high school students with her karate, but apparently she also injures world class soccer players. I'm not at all surprised.
