As expected, the Kansas City Chiefs on Wednesday officially hired Romeo Crennel to be their new defensive coordinator. When they take the field next year, the Chiefs will have the same defensive coordinator, offensive coordinator and top front office executive who helped lead New England to three Super Bowl titles between 2002-05. Throw in quarterback Matt Cassel, who backed up Tom Brady with the Patriots, and the New England-Kansas City connection becomes even stronger as Scott Pioli attempts to reverse the fortunes of the long-suffering Chiefs. Crennel, who replaces Clancy Pendergast, reunites with general manager Pioli and offensive coordinator Charlie Weis. Weis was hired by Kansas City last week following his ouster as Notre Dame's coach.
You can quote me on this and take it straight to the bank. 3 years from now the Chiefs are going to be a force in the NFL Playoffs. Cassel is the real deal, they got a slew of young receivers, some promising talent on defense and 3 of the greatest football minds the sport has ever seen. Head Coach Todd Haley is pretty savvy too. He's the guy who made Kurt Warner's rebirth as a premier passer look like the second coming of Jesus a year ago. All Pioli needs is a couple more drafts to get his feet under him and the Chiefs are off and running. That's the word of the lord.
